Armenian Government Resigns
Following the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister, Serzh Sargsyan, President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian has accepted the resignation of the Cabinet. The document was posted on the official website of the president.
Until the country has a new Cabinet, the First Deputy PM, Karen Karapetyan will fulfill the duties of the Prime Minister.
“The political events taking place should in no way affect the course of our normal life. I appeal to all our citizens, to all political forces to be as vigilant and law-abiding as possible, to respect the rights of other citizens,” Karapetyan stated.
Armenian opposition leader, MP Nikol Pashinyan, says the country urgently needs snap elections.
“Now, as Sargsyan left, we will continue negotiations with Acting PM, Karen Karapetyan,” he stated during the rally at the Republic Square in Yerevan yesterday.
He also added that according to the agreement reached with the Acting PM, all people detained during the protest rallies will be released.
The United States released a statement regarding the latest developments in Armenia, saying they are ready to work with the Armenian government which will replace the Cabinet of Serzh Sargsyan.
Washington expects Sargsyan’s successor to be named as a result of a democratic process "carried out in a spirit of transparency and in accordance with the laws and international obligations of Armenia."
“We expect to work closely with the new government,” the State Department representative added.
Meanwhile, the Russian federation reiterated that the developments in Armenia are the internal issues of the country.
