60 Documentaries – 5 Days – CinéDOC Tbilisi Starts Tomorrow
It is the highlight of the year for every documentary aficionado in Georgia. The CinéDOC Tbilisi Festival enters its 6th edition tomorrow running from May 3 – May 8 welcoming the best productions Georgia and other partner countries have to offer.
Zurab Maghalashvili, Director of the National Film Center, spoke to local and international press representatives today to elaborate on the importance of the festival and the impact it could generate over the recent years in Georgia. He was joined by Archil Khetagouri, Director of CinéDOC Tbilisi, Ia Tsagareishvili, Representative of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Audrey Margueritat, Representative of the French Institute, and Barbara Von Münchhausen, Director of the Goethe Institute.
The international support for the festival is striking and builds on the cooperation of the recent years. The German Goethe Institute participated at the design of the official program, screening six movies at this year’s festival.
“We are happy to join again this year, as we have done already the recent years. It is the 6th time and we have been included in the organization since the beginning. This year we have again invited numerous experts from Germany. For example, Wieland Speck, who ran the Berlinale’s section of Panorama and still works as an advisor for the official program of the Berlinale. He also brings a documentary to Georgia about Thomas Mann,” happily announced Barbara Von Münchhausen.
After the screening of the vast majority of the movies, the audience will get the chance to engage with experts and international filmmakers to discuss the different aspects of the featured work.
For the first time, a Georgian documentary will be shown during the opening ceremony, as the festival decided to screen “Transparent World” by Vakhtang Kuntsev-Gabashvili.
A tradition of the nationally important movie festival is the hosting of a foreign country to showcase productions created outside of Georgia. This year’s “Guest Country” is Romania in an attempt to shed the spotlight on essential documentaries from the country on the other side of the Black Sea.
