Georgian Food Exports Rocket to New High
According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia, the export of produce and other agricultural goods to the EU market has soared. In line with the Georgian dominance at European wine and nut festivals, these two products are the most known export goods of Georgia.
In addition to wine, also various other alcoholic spirits and mineral water brands top the export list. Georgia’s high mountain ranges and glaciers guarantee a first-class water quality often unfound in areas such as the southern Italy.The figures published by the ministry for the first quarter of 2018 highlight a new record-breaking export volume worth $37.8 million, as total exports surged by 22.1% compared to the same period in 2017.
Here is a break down of goods with the strongest increase:
- Alcoholic drinks – 112% increase y/y (worth $6.3 million)
- Wine – 62% increase (worth $1.9 million)
- Processed hazelnuts – 37% increase (worth $0.6 million)
- Mineral water – 21% increase (worth $0.7 million)
Georgian companies experienced stronger trade relations with certain EU member states than with others:
France – $6.9 million, Lithuania – $5.5 million, Spain – $3.7 million, The Netherlands – $3.3 million
According to the current economic indicators, a continuation of this trend is expected for the second quarter of 2018 too.
