Mayor Delays announcing GD Candidate for October Election

In anticipation of the upcoming Presidential elections in October, Tbilisi Mayor and member of the Georgian Dream coalition Kakha Kaladze was asked to disclose information on the new presidential candidate.

He announced that the coalition will announce their candidate two months before the elections as leading members are still discussing the issue. “The presidential election will be held in October, thus it’s too early to name a candidate yet. First, we are discussing the candidate, then the candidate will be selected. Only after this procedure is complete, some two months before the election, will we disclose the name” Kaladze stated.

Last week, Bidzina Ivanishvili announced his comeback into politics, leading to the spread rumors of a potential candidacy in the October elections. After Giorgi Margvelashvili won the last elections in 2013, Georgia is heading for its seventh presidential voting since independence.

A new law enacted in 2017 will make the upcoming election the last at which a president is elected through a direct voting system. Afterwards, the law gives the power to choose a new president to a 300-member College of Electors, which will vote in line with the public desire.
