Theater Town to Be Built Near Tbilisi
The Tbilisi Kote Marjanishvili Theater mini-town is to be built on the Kojori road, outside Tbilisi and the construction process is expected to be completed by October 2019.
The mini town will be around 10 minute's ride from the city’s central Liberty (Freedom) Square and will be built on an area of 6,000 square meters.
The cost of the project is 5.5 million GEL and will unite several wooden buildings, creative labs, a large rehearsal space, residency for visiting artists and more, with the aim of opening possibilities for the theater company which is constrained in its current venue.
According to Netgazeti, in parallel with the activities in the mini town, the main building of Marjanishvili Theater will be hosting performances as usual.
Ekaterina Mazmishvili, General Director of the theater, says the mini town will host additional activities outside performance dates. According to her, mini theater "towns" exist in many countries, including Great Britain, China, and North European countries.
“We want to make large-scale performances and for this we need more space; something which will be available at the mini theater town,” she noted.
Mazmashvili says a project design competition will be announced this year.
Tbilisi Kote Marjanishvili Theater was founded in 1982.
