7 Candidates Presented for Chief Prosecutor’s Post in Georgia
There are seven candidates for the post of the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia, which became vacant after the former Chief Prosecutor Irakli Shotadze resigned on June 5 amid ongoing large-scale protest rallies in the capital.
The protests started after the Tbilisi City Court announced its verdict on the murder of two teenage boys in which two minors detained for the murder case were found guilty, but neither of them were identified as the murderer of teen Davit Saralidze.
The candidates are:
- Giorgi Gogadze, Deputy Chief Prosecutor from 2013 to present
- Grigol Gagnidze, lawyer
- Ioseb Bachiashvili, Doctor of Law
- Paata Shavadze, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Chamber of Georgia, Doctor of Law
- Zurab Jorbenadze, Lawyer, human rights activist
- Gia Berdzebadze, Chairman of Political Movement of Veterans and Patriots of Georgia
- Nana Revazishvili, Member of Georgian Bar Association

Academic circles, law professionals, and NGOs can nominate candidates for the position in accordance with the law.
As a result of consultations, the Minister of Justice will select three candidates according to established criteria and submit them to the Prosecutor Council for approval.
Candidates for the Chief Prosecutor nominated by the Minister of Justice will be voted on separately at the session of the Prosecutor's Council. The voting process is hidden. The candidate who receives the highest number of votes will be approved.
After this, the Justice Minister will present the winning candidate to the government. If the cabinet approves the candidate, he or she will be sent to Parliament for approval, after which the lawmakers will confirm or reject the proposed candidate.
