Georgian Manufacturers Build Parts for CERN Megaproject

Georgian science and engineering talents are playing a role in a major project at CERN – the European Center for Nuclear Studies – just outside Geneva, Switzerland. The ATLAS experiment, is one of the four major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

ATLAS explores the basic building blocks and fundamental forces of nature and is one of the largest collaborative efforts ever attempted in particle physics. The detector and technology are some of the most complex scientific instruments ever constructed.

Georgian Technical University in Tbilisi is constructing a protective aluminum structures, nine meters in diameter, for the ATLAS experiment. Construction is taking place in the Elita Burji factory on the southern edge of the capital. The design and manufacturing process meet ISO standards for safety and quality.

An important component was sent to CERN on Wednesday to receive its final adjustments.

Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Alexander Tevzadze, and Chairman of the Education, Science and Culture Committee of the Georgian Parliament, Mariam Jashi, visited the plant together, where scientists from Technical University explained the entire manufacturing process.
