The French National Day in Georgia: Singing In The Rain
On July, 14 France celebrated its National Day commemorating the storming of the Bastille. For the expatriates who live in Georgia, they were invited at 6 pm at the French School Of Caucasus, close to Vake Park. Were also invited students who plan to study in France the coming year.
At 6.30 pm many police officers were ensuring the safety of the event outside whereas many staff were finalizing the preparation of the reception. Nothing was left to chance … excepted the weather. As soon as the French ambassador, Pascal Meunier started his speech, the rain invited itself and people streamed into the shelters. “All the better, by this way you will be forced to listen to me” jokingly said the French ambassador. First he welcomed the Georgian efforts in terms of development and the new partnership between French and Georgian universities, and thus reminded that this year was an important anniversary for both countries: End of the first world war, independence of Georgia.
After the political players came the singers. Three Georgians women sang, among others, in a perfect French, “Douce France” and “Mercy” (the French Eurovision song contest). Finally, the rain did not discourage those who wanted to dance, feet naked.
