Bashar al-Assad Hosts Anatoly Bibilov
The President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, hosted the self-proclaimed president of Georgia’s Russian-occupied region of South Ossetia, Anatoly Bibilov, in Damascus.
Syria recognized Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent countries on May 29.
The step of Damascus was denounced by the wider international community, except Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Nauru. However, despite this, Bashal al-Assad invited Bibilov to discuss mutual cooperation prospects.
According to the S. Ossetian state news agency PEC, Bibilov thanked Assad for recognizing the "independence" of breakaway South Ossetia.
"This was of great importance for the people of South Ossetia. Having recognized South Ossetia, Syria has confirmed its democratic values, adherence to international norms, where it is determined the right of any people to be among the same free nations," said Bibilov.
As reported, he noted that the development of relations between South Ossetia and Syria “meets the interests of present and future generations of both countries.”
PEC says Assad noted that the establishment of diplomatic relations and the development of cooperation is important for both ‘states.’
"Your visit will be the impetus for the development of relations, and the agreement that we will sign today will be the foundation for a full and diverse cooperation," Bashar Assad said.
According to the Syrian leader, he appreciates the support of the leadership of de facto South Ossetia in the fight against terrorism.
"I appreciate your position and the support of Syria in the fight against terrorism. This position is based on your moral principles and international law,” Assad added.
In addition, the sides signed the “Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.” The document envisages strengthening of friendly relations and the establishment of cooperation in various fields.
In addition, the parties agreed to promote the development of cooperation in science, education, culture and sports. A separate point in the “agreement” states that the de facto authorities of South Ossetia and Syria will contribute to the creation of favorable economic, financial and legal conditions for entrepreneurial, investment and other economic activities, including stimulation and mutual protection of investments.
According to PEC, Bibilov’s visit to the Syrian Arab Republic will last for several days. He is going to meet with the Prime Minister, Speaker of the Parliament and representatives of the business community of Syria.
