Sozar Subari to Head New ‘Regional Management Agency’
Sozar Subari has been tapped to lead the government’s new Regional Management Agency, Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze announced today. Subari previously served as Minister of Internally Displaced Persons, Accommodation and Refugees, a ministry which was disbanded in Bakhtadze’s second round of ministerial reforms. Its duties were distributed between the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The Ministry of Infrastructure was previously the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development – the second part of which has now been spun off into the Regional Management Agency.
“Our previous experience showed us the necessity of the creation of such an agency within the government administration. The agency will ensure the government’s maximal engagement and coordination in terms of regional policy...Unfortunately, the regional management system does not respond to existing challenges” said Bakhtadze, hoping the new agency will play a significant role in helping regional issues respond to reforms.
Yesterday, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Maia Tskitishvili, met with current and former governors. The meeting was attended by Subari, who quickly left to address the situation on the Mestia-Chuberi Road in Svaneti.
“We summarized four months of working together on various projects and thanked each other for our cooperation. I think the Prime Minister explained that new challenges and initiatives, new reforms need new people, and I believe that these changes will positively benefit the regions,” Maia Tskitishvili said.
Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze dismissed 5 governors yesterday – the Governor of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Levan Zautashvili, the Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Levan Shonia, the Shida Kartli Governor, Akaki Machutadze, the Kvemo Kartli Governor, Grigol Nemsadze, and the Samtskhe-Javakheti Governor, Kakha Samkharadze.
