Commemoration of 2008 Russo-Georgian War

Georgian officials, joined by the foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, gathered in commemoration of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war on its 10th anniversary and spoke out about the unfortunate consequences of the short but violent events.

When Prime Minister Bakhtadze visited the Mukhatgverdi cemetery today in Tbilisi, he spoke about the aggression from Russia towards Georgia and its people, the lives that were lost 10 years ago, and expressed his condolences to every family that lost their children, mothers, fathers, brothers, next to kin or friends.

“Unfortunately, 20% of Georgian territory is still occupied and our citizens have no possibility to go back to their original dwellings. Building a strong state, irrevocable integration with Europe, and the establishment of a strong society and competitive economy is our clear response to this,” the PM stated.

In the afternoon he discussed the war and its consequences with the foreign guests, stating that Georgia’s goal is peaceful resolution of the conflict. President Margvelashvili also stated that in response to Russia’s continued aggression, Georgia will not stop on its path of development.
