Ambassador: US Was First to Help Georgia after 2008 War
The Ambassador of Georgia to the United States, David Bakradze, stated that the US was the first country that helped Georgia after the Georgia-Russia August war 2008.
The politician made the statement at discussions held by the Georgian office of Voice of America in the US.
“The US was the first to give aid to Georgia to cope with the post-war reality by allocating up to $1 billion dollars,” Barkardze said.
According to him, for more than two decades the US has been helping to establish Georgia as a democratic and European state.
“Georgia became an example of a small country that is a responsible partner when it comes to international security and it is an example of democratic development. We share the values of the US. We prefer peace instead of conflict and destruction,” the Ambassador stated.
He noted that a few days ago, the President of the United States Donald Trump signed the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, where Georgia is mentioned as a US ally and partner and that the US supports its NATO membership.
“We believe that with our efforts and the advanced position, we will be able to engage Russia in the essential dialogue for peace in Georgia and the region, which is in our and the US interest," Davit Bakradze said.
