Georgian President on Diplomatic Mission in New York

President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili traveled to New York Tuesday for a working visit. He will be participating in the United Nations’ 14th International Forum "Sustaining Peace and Development in a Changing World". The forum will engage up to 50 current and former world leaders.

Margvelashvili is expected to represent Georgia’s interests with a focus on security, the development of Georgia-US relations, and the country’s significant contribution to NATO military forces in Afghanistan, in particular.

Margvelashvili’s International Secretary Tengiz Pkhaladze has announced that there will be high-level talks for stakeholders to discuss issues relevant to Georgia, including national security, the occupied territories, and the future of the transatlantic cooperation.

Pkhaladze says that the President will meet with his counterparts from various countries while in New York, starting with Slovak President Andrej Kiska, whom he met on Wednesday afternoon. The meeting focused on successful political cooperation between Georgia and Slovakia and prospects for its further advancement. Georgia’s occupied territories and security environment were also major topics raised during the meeting. While discussing Georgia-Russia relations, the importance of bringing this problem high on the EU agenda was emphasized.
