Laima Liucija Andrikiene on Statements About Election Observer Organizations
Laima Liucija Andrikiene, head of the European Parliament Parliamentary Assembly’s observation delegation has said that Georgia—a country that hopes to become a member of the European Union—should not be stating that election observer organizations promote fascism.
Georgia is a relatively young democracy. Andrikiene believes that the democracy craves “free civil society that is trusted, protected and supported.”
According to Andrikiene, this year’s election is vital in Georgia’s growing democracy and for Georgia’s quest to join the EU. Her along with her organization PACE thoroughly support Georgia, its democracy, and its future with the EU. She noted the significance of the lack of violence during election day. “This allowed citizens to peacefully realize their democratic rights,” she said. However, she also noted her concern over the decision of Russia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and their de facto rulers to close the administrative borders and how it prevented many Georgians from voting in this year’s election.
Further, Laima Liucija Andrikiene noted the nature of the pre-election debates. Fueled by negativity and personal attacks versus “specific visions about the future.” “It should not be said in the country that wants to become a member of the EU that election observer organizations promote fascism. Georgian citizens do not deserve such words. Young democracy needs free civil society that is trusted, protected and supported,” stated Andrikiene.
