EU Observers Say Georgian Elections Were Fair
During the elections, observation missions from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) arrived in Georgia to monitor the polls and report on the fairness and freedom of the elections. A day after the 2018 presidential elections in Georgia on Sunday, October 28, the European Union released an official statement.
According to the preliminary conclusions of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission, the elections were "competitive and professionally administered," giving Georgian voters a genuine voice.
The mission noted several shortcomings on election day, however, in particular examples of misusing administrative resources, "sharp polarization" in the private media, "negative campaigning and harsh rhetoric."
The EU emphasized that, during the second round of the elections, as throughout the entire process, it is crucial to ensure high democratic standards. "It is important that all parties continue to adhere to democratic principles and to respect the will of the Georgian people," said a press release from the EU spokesperson.
The press release continued, "The European Union stands by a democratic, stable and prosperous Georgia, including with a vibrant civil society. We look forward to strengthening further cooperation with Georgia to advance political association and economic integration and to deliver on the joint commitments under the Association Agreement."
