Juncker: The More Georgia Reforms, the More the EU Will Support It
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker says the EU and Georgia’s fates and destinies have long been intertwined, adding the unilateral commitment of Georgia to deepening the integration with the European Union is a major step forward.
Juncker made the statement at a joint press-conference with the Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze in Brussels, on November 21.
The European Commission President remembered his visit to Georgia on 26 May this year, saying he was honored to see the courage of the Georgian people and the ambition of the Georgian nation.
“The more the country reforms, the more we will support it. We have backed, since 2014, with €590 million of financial support the efforts of Georgia and we hope to unlock a further €45 million of micro-financial assistance in the near future,” he stated.
Juncker added that Georgia's commitment and desire to step-up its cooperation with the European Union shows that this relationship is a priority.
“You can count on the European Union to believe in Georgia's future, and to firmly defend its territorial integrity," he said.
