IB Mthiebi – English as a World Language

Tbilisi boarding school IB Mthiebi, functioning for more than 23 years, has initiated and implemented a new project called: ‘English as a World Language’.  The primary aim of it is to help students carry out research, use theoretical knowledge in practice, familiarize themselves with the British culture and literature and discover something new.

Among variety of interesting activities organized within the project, students lead a number of studies on themes such as: history and origins of the English language, English in the modern society, the influence of English on other languages, the architecture of Great Britain, English cinematography, the role of the British rock groups on the development of the economy of Great Britain.

‘English as a World Language’ covers 9-12 grades. Taking into consideration the importance of individual freedom for the representatives of this age group, the school allows the children to choose their roles for this project. In this way, groups of photographers, journalists, actors and interpreters have been created. All of them have particular tasks they have to work on.

The project includes not only extra-curricular activities but also involves school subjects as well. Students work on the topics they study in English in mathematics, cybersecurity, economics, arts and world literature.

There have been a number of interesting and interactive meetings with special guests, including a public figure and journalist, Nugzar Rukhadze, famous Georgian philologist Levan Berdzenishvili and the Professor of Lexicography at the Institute of Western European Languages and Literature at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Tinatin Margalitadze. The school has also collaborated with the organization ‘English Book in Georgia’, which is focused on the development of the teaching of the English language.

The British atmosphere in IB Mthiebi will last until November 30 and will be completed by the theatrical and musical performances of students.

IB Mthiebi plans various interesting projects for its students in future as well.
