Katie Melua and Gori Women’s Choir Perform in London
On 9 December, Katie Melua and Gori Women’s Choir performed at the Methodist Central Hall in London.
The performance follows the re-release of a two-CD special edition of her 2016 In Winter album which includes a concert recorded in Admiralspalast Berlin as well as choral arrangements of Melua’s hits recorded in a small DIY studio in the community center in Gori.
Melua performed half of her songs with a live band and half with the choir. The deep richness and depth of the women’s voices and the complex harmonies were almost orchestral. Conducted by their chief, Teona Tsiramua, the women refected the cultural importance of singing in Georgia.
Melua was born in Kutaisi in 1984, before moving to Ireland and then the UK at the age of 8. “It’s clear Georgia has never left her,” read one review by Liz Thomson. The collaboration with the Gori Women’s Choir demonstrates her strong connection with her home country.
