British PM Theresa May Survives Confidence Vote of Conservative MPs

Theresa May remains Prime Minister of the UK after winning a vote of confidence in her leadership of the Conservative Party.

Securing 200 votes and 63% of the total vote, she won the vote with a majority of 83. Nonetheless, the vote of confidence undermines her ability to rule her party and her authority.

Speaking after the results, May stated “I am pleased to have received the backing of my colleagues in tonight’s ballot. Whilst I am grateful for the support, a significant number of colleagues did cast a vote against me.”

48 MPs triggered the confidence vote as they are angry at her Brexit agreement which they perceive to betray the 2016 referendum result.

Despite the victory for May, the opinion of MPs is torn. Some believe that she can now tackle the issue at hand and move Brexit proceedings forward, whilst others believe a new PM is needed in order to re-negotiate the deal.
