Zurabishvili Demands Re-investigation of Gamsakhurdia Murder Case
Georgia’s new President Salome Zurabishvili says the murder case of Georgia’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia should be re-investigated.
Zurabishvili has sent the request to the Parliament to expand the statute of limitations on murder of Georgia’s first President.
The information was released by the President’s Press Office.
“I share the concerns of Zviad Gamsakhurdia's family over his murder case and demand to extend the statute of limitations on murder of Georgia’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia. I know that it is necessary to carry out relevant legislative measures, which is not the president's competence so I address the legislative body to take into account my and Gamsakhurdia’s family demands in this regard,” the President’s statement reads.
Zviad Gamsakhurdia died in unclear circumstances in the Jikhashkari village in the Samegrelo region of western Georgia on December 31, 1993. A variety of reasons have been speculated as the cause of his death, among them suicide.
