Michelle Obama Stuns in Balenciaga by Demna Gvasalia

While promoting her new memoir, New York Times Bestseller Becoming, Michelle Obama turned heads and elicted gasps with what may be one of her most daring and memorable outfits to date.

The former First Lady stunned (and maybe blinded) the crowd at Brooklyn's Barclays Center in a head to toe Balenciaga look - a glossy lemon yellow shirt dress opened with a deep slit that reveled silver-technicolor sequined thigh-high boots. The boots stole the show, really, every time they shimmered from beneath the dress under the stadium lights, and Obama navigated the four+ inch heels with her signature grace.

While living in the White House as First Lady, Obama's looks were much more understanded, classic, but her fashion sense has always been praised for celebrating her self-confidence and, in particular, her gorgeous arms. Notably, she paid for all her own clothing during her eight-year tenure. The Balenciaga boots have a nearly $4,000 price tag.

Vox reports that Obama and her interview partner, Sarah Jessica Parker (of Sex in the City fame) discussed the bold outfit. As first lady, Obama was always aware that her clothes were "dissected," but "now, I'm free to do whatever...They were just really cute. I was like, 'Those some nice boots!'"

Harper's Bazar explained that "As anyone with a modicum of fashion knowledge will attest, Balenciaga is the brand of the moment, with creative director Demna Gvasalia reimagining the house's signatures for a modern audience. It's not a label one might associate with a former First Lady, which is exactly why Obama's latest style choice is such a triumph. The look is taken from Balenciaga's spring/summer 2019 show, when it was styled with black thigh-high boots which Obama swapped for a glitter version."

Gvasalia is from Georgia.
