Jvari Monastery Closes to Tourists

Jvari Monastery in Mtskheta is temporarily closed to tourists due to the presence of street traders at the monastery.

Father Andrea Jagmaidze, head of the Patriarchate’s press service noted “The monastery was temporarily closed due to street traders. There is a very uncontrollable situation which is inappropriate for the monastery.”

“Such a high number of street traders is a serious problem for the monastery. The situation must be regulated,” he continued. 

Jvari monastery, built in the 6th Century, is a popular tourist spot for visitors to Georgia and listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
