Georgia Recognizes Opposition Leader as Acting Venezuelen President
Georgia recognizes opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president in Venezuela. The US and other foreign states have also voiced their support for Guaido.
Tweeting on 24 January, Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze said “Georgia recognizesJuan Guaido as Interim President of Venezuela. We express hope thatNational Assembly of Venezuela will establish a transitional government, prepare free & fair elections & ensure peaceful transition of power. Georgia supports the courageous people of Venezuela in their fight for democracy.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs David Zalkaliani also tweeted his recognition of the new president and supports their fight for freedom and democracy.
On 23 January, Guaido urged supporters to take to the streets in an attempt to oust President Nicolas Maduro. He then declared himself acting President in the crisis-ridden South American country.
“I swear to formally assume the national executive powers as acting president of Venezuela to end the usurpation, [install] a transitional government and hold free elections,” he told supporters.
Shortly after declaring his presidency, the US as well as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru recognized Guadio as president.
So far, many poor Venezuelans at the country’s military have remained loyal to Maduro. Tensions remain at fever pitch. 4 people were killed during protests on Tuesday night and dozens were arrested.
