Giorgi Shvelidze Wins American Society of Cinematographers Award

Georgian cinematographer Giorgi Shvelidze has won the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Spotlight Award on February 10 in Los Angeles.

Shvelidze is the cinematographer of Namme by Zaza Khalvashi, Georgia’s Academy Award bid. Namme portrays the story of a family who cures sick villagers with local healing water. When the water begins to disappear due to the construction of a hydropower station, the village remembers old traditions to solve the problem.

“It’s amazing, it’s a dream. I want to say it means a lot, not only for me. It’s an example for many cinematographers from all over the world. It means anything is possible. We have to keep doing our job well.” said Shvelidze after receiving the award.

Shvelidze won the Spotlight award over 2 other nominees: Lukas Dohnt for Girl and Chloe Zhao for The Rider.

The American Society of Cinematographer celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, making the award even more special.
