The International Criminal Court Signs an Agreement with Georgia

According to the Ministry of Justice, the negotiations that started in 2015 between the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Georgia have come to an end.

The Georgian Minister of Justice, Thea Tsulukiani, and the Vice-President of the ICC, Robert Fremr, signed an agreement on the enforcement of ICC Sentences. Through this agreement, Georgia affirms its involvement in the ICC sentence enforcement system, and “the government retains the right, in each particular case, to determine whether to receive the convicted person and enforce the ICC sentence on its territory or not” (Ministry of Justice of Georgia).

Georgia will be able to assist the International Criminal Court and receive convicted persons on its own territory.

This agreement plays as an official recognition of the Georgian penitentiary system as aligned with the international standards.
