Akhalgori "Checkpoint" Opens Briefly after 40-Day Closure

The so-called checkpoint in the Akhalgori area opened temporarily to allow around 200 residents of the territory to leave the district.

Due to the spread of the H1N1 respiratory virus, the de facto leadership of Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) closed the so-called border on 11 January in order to prevent a further distribution of the virus. Students and people who visit doctors in other regions of Georgia were told to leave the territory.

The de-facto leadership announced that the so-called checkpoint in the Alkhalgori area will stay open for the next three days to allow certain people to leave the district. The route from Alkhalgori to Georgia is opened while entrance to the territory from other parts of Georgia remains closed

The Tskhinvali de-facto leadership stated it believes the danger of H1N1 spread is not yet over; that is why the so-called border is to remain generally closed.

The central Georgian government condemned the act as a violation of fundamental human rights.
