MP Beselia to Create Political Platform

Former member of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) majority, Eka Beselia, has said she plans to set up a new political platform after consultations with her co-thinkers in the majority.

Beselia made the decision to leave the ruling team yesterday after the Parliament of Georgia voted against the bill on common courts signed by her and eight other lawmakers.

The draft envisaged the suspension of the appointment of judges for life tenure in the first and second instances of courts.

The initiative is based on the article of the transitional provisions of the Constitution, according to which the Supreme Council of Justice may not use the appointment of judges for life tenure until 31 December 2024, but use the probationary term instead.

The draft law was signed by Georgian Dream members Gedevan Popkhadze, Sasha Erkvania, Zviad Kvachantiradze, Koba Narchemashvili, Levan Koberidze, Davit Chichnadze, Otar Chrdileli, Eka Beselia, and Levan Gogichaishvili.

However, the initiative gained the support of only 45 MPs, while 17 voted against. The draft law required the support of 76 MPs.

“I stay in parliament as an independent MP, I will wait for the further decision of my colleagues who are protesting against everything that is happening now in the legislative body and the ruling party. I will wait for the decisions they will make in the coming days,” Beselia said.
