The Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze presented a new project in the Shida Kartli region of Georgia yesterday. A reservoir will be built to provide safe drinking water to five villages and 10.000 inhabitants as well as irrigation water to 7.000 hectares of land in 22 villages.

The reservoir will be built on the River Tedzami in the Shida Kartli region. The construction work is to be completed in 47 months, starting from this year. The investment amounts to 71 million GEL in total and it will employ 500 locals at the construction phase.

The Georgian PM has named the project "historic."

"This will be the first large scale construction of a reservoir in the last 50 years in Georgia,” said Bakhtadze "In the history of independent Georgia, this is the first project of this type that will bring new life to the Shida Kartli region and will allow us to develop agriculture and tourism in this beautiful region," he continued.

The project is directed to have a social impact on rural areas in Georgia, as regional development is a main priority for the government.
