Doctors' Day
On March 30, the United States of America celebrates National Doctors’ Day. Along with the International Doctors’ Day which is celebrated on the first Monday of October, Georgia marks this date on the calendar as well. To honor physicians, their work and the contribution they make to the society, different events are usually organized on this day.
On Sunday, March 31, Medical Corporation EVEX, for instance, hosted a concert in Tbilisi Concert Hall featuring famous Georgian conductor Nikoloz Rachveli and Georgian National Orchestra, Gori Women Choir, Giorgi Cagareli on viola and others. The musicians played popular soundtracks of Georgian films & theater written by the legendary Georgian composer Gia Kancheli. The event was for the guests of closed circle (EVEX medics and other staff members) and the beautiful concert went on for over 2 hours.
The date chosen is not a mindless coincidence. 30th of March is the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery on March 30, 1842, in Jefferson, when Dr. Crawford Long used ether to anesthetize a patient, John Venable, and excised a tumor from his neck without causing him any pain.
National Doctor’s Day was first celebrated in 1933. This first observance included mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. Officially, National Doctor’s Day has been celebrated since 1991, resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States. To recognize this holiday events are organized by staff members in different healthcare facilities.
