Georgian PM Congratulates Zelensky on Becoming President of Ukraine

The Prime Minister of Georgia, Mamuka Bakhtadze has congratulated a comedian actor Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a newcomer in politics running his first-ever race for a public office, on winning the Presidential elections in Ukraine.

The second round of the elections took place in Ukraine on April 21, where Zelensky received over 73% of support among the decided voters while current President Petro Poroshenko received 24%.

The first round of the presidential election took place on March 31 among 39 candidates, a record number. Of those who voted, Poroshenko got 15.95% of support while Zelenskiy – 30.24%.

“Congratulations to the newly elected President Volodymyr Zelensky! Georgia stands with Ukraine in its peaceful and democratic decision!” Bakhtadze’s tweet reads.

Zelenskiy, 41, turned his satirical TV show Servant of the People - in which he portrays an ordinary citizen who becomes president after fighting corruption - into reality.

Poroshenko, who admitted defeat after the first exit polls were published, has said he will not be leaving politics. He claims his opponent is “too inexperienced.”
