Days of Nature in Tbilisi
A kick-off event for the Days of Nature in Tbilisi will take place in Tbilisi on May 17 from 4.30 PM to 5.30 PM at the National Botanical Garden of Georgia.
An ever-growing technological advancement resulting in air pollution and the loss of biodiversity calls for ecological awareness. Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is no exception when it comes to the side effects of fast city life. Acknowledging the ecological and social value of nature in Tbilisi, protecting and appreciating existing green spaces – all this is essential for supporting the biodiversity in Tbilisi.
Having that in mind, an urban biodiversity partner network was established in 2018. The network comprises the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture, the Environmental Information and Education Centre (EIEC), Tbilisi City Hall, the National Botanical Garden, the Tbilisi Zoo, the NGOs National Geographic Georgia, Ecovision, the Society for Nature Conservation (Sabuko), Science, Environment, Education and Development (SEED), and the film documentary company EcoFilms. The partner network was initiated by and received support from the Intergrated Biodiversity Management, South Caucasus programme of the GIZ on behalf of the German government.
Green initiatives, as identified by the work of the partner network, like recreational activities, eco-tourism and nature-based education need to be put in place to help urban biodiversity survive. So, an urban biodiversity campaign was launched in 2018 in order to raise awareness on the issue of urban nature importance among the citizens of Tbilisi. To honor the International Day of Biological Diversity (UN) - which is celebrated on 22 May – many events are scheduled as a concentrated effort to address the population of the capital of Georgia. A kick-off event for the Days of Nature in Tbilisi will take place in Tbilisi on May 17 from 4.30 PM to 5.30 PM at the National Botanical Garden of Georgia.
