U.S. Embassy Responds to Ongoing Borderization in Gugutiantkari

The U.S. Embassy to Georgia has expressed concerns over the illegal borderization process in the Village of Gegutiantkari, Gori Municipality.

“The U.S. Embassy is troubled by reports that Russian-backed de-facto authorities have resumed the installation of fencing at the village of Gugutiantkari, near the Administrative Boundary Line of the Russian-occupied Georgian territory of South Ossetia, - the US Embassy to Georgia said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the process of “borderization” is a threat to peace and stability, as it harms livelihoods and hinders the flow of people and goods.

“We once again call upon Russia to withdraw its forces to pre-conflict positions and allow unfettered access for the delivery of humanitarian assistance, per its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement,” the statement of US Embassy says.

The situation remains tense in Gugutiantkari, a village of the Gori Municipality, where Russian troops set up artificial barriers and barbed wire fences as a form of the so-called border a few days ago. The process resumes periodically.
