Oscars: Sweden Selects 'And Then We Danced' for International Feature Category
Sweden has submitted Levan Akin's drama ‘And Then We Danced’ for best International Feature category in the 92nd Academy Awards.
The 2019 Swedish-Georgian drama film 'And Then We Danced,' directed by Levan Akin, is the first Georgian film about love between two homosexuals.
It was screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and received very positive feedback.
The plot tells of Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) who has been training at the National Georgian Ensemble with his partner Mary (Ana Javakishvili). However, when Irakli (Bachi Valishvili) arrives, he becomes both his rival and strongest desire.
Actor Levan Gelbakhiani was recently awarded best actor honors at the Sarajevo Film Festival for his lead role, and the film also shared Odessa IFF's grand prix (with Ukraine's Oscar submission Homeward) last month.
Sweden has been a prolific presence at the Oscars. It last won an Academy Award in 1983 with Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander, and most recently was nominated for Ruben Ostlund's The Square in 2017.
The 92nd Academy Awards are set to be held Feb. 9, 2020.
