United Opposition Holds Protest Rally Outside Parliament
The united opposition is holding a rally in front of Parliament, protesting the nomination of former Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia as Prime Minister.
Zaal Udumashvili, the member of the United National Movement party, stated that the Georgian people will never accept Giorgi Gakharia’s candidacy as the Prime Minister of the country, as they remember the developments of June 20. He added the protest related to this fact will become even stronger in future.
“The wounds of the Georgian people have yet to heal. They remember Gakharia’s moves while serving as the Interior Minister of Georgia. Now, the government is planning to appoint him as Prime Minister. The public will not accept his candidacy. The protest will become stronger day by day and the population will show its strength to the ruling party. If they haven’t seen this strength yet, they will definitely see it now”, Udumashvili said.
He noted that the process of declaring confidence to the renewed government by the members of the Parliament on September 8 will also be accompanied by protest rallies.
"Sunday will be a day of large-scale protests, as the government plans to appoint Gakharia as Prime Minister on September 8. Naturally, our protest will be very loud and strong”, he said.
Protestors gathered on Rustaveli Avenue have been asking for the resignation of Gakharia since June 20, after police shot rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowd, injuring around 200 people and 30 journalists.
