Festive Events Canceled in Kutaisi

The Mayor of Kutaisi Giorgi Chighvaria has published a post on his official Facebook page upon which the celebratory ceremony of lighting up the Christmas Tree of Kutaisi, planned for December 21, will no longer take place. The Mayor reports that this decision was made because of the tragedy of Luka Siradze, who was only 15 when he took his own life.

The Kutaisi Mayor offered his sorrow and regret over the minor’s suicide.

“I would like to express my deep sorrow over the death of Luka Siradze. My condolences to the family, friends and to the whole unity of Georgia. All of us together are responsible for this tragedy. Because of this, the Christmas Tree light up festivity will no longer take place,” reads the statement of Kutaisi Mayor.

It's also been reported that other celebratory events have been canceled in the town as well.

On December 12, 15-year-old Luka Siradze attempted suicide after being questioned by the police for damaging the property of the private Mtsvane (Green) School in Tbilisi by spraying offensive graffiti on its walls. The minor died at Tbilisi’s Iashvili Children’s Hospital on December 17.
