Georgian FM Talks about Georgian Doctor with UN Under Secretary-General

Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani spoke to the UN Under Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo earlier today, discussing the illegal imprisonment of Georgian doctor Vazha Gaprincdashvili, reports the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Zalkaliani and DiCarlo have reiterated the reasons why the sentencing of the doctor is unacceptable and even shameful, that it is a destructive action which further complicates the already severe humanitarian situation on the ground. It was stated that the consolidated response of the international community to such illegal actions is of vital importance,” says the Ministry.

Zalkaliani has thanked the UN for its attention to the issue and its involvement in the joint effort to release the imprisoned doctor.

Gaprindashvili was sentenced to one year and nine months of prison on December 20 “for deliberately crossing the border,” as he did not admit to “crossing the border,” saying that Tskhinvali is part of Georgia and is now occupied by Russia.

The family has urged the Georgian government and the international community to use all levers at hand for the release of the doctor as "it is the case of dignity and should concern everyone.”
