Parliament to Discuss Developments in Occupied Abkhazia Today
The representatives of the State Security Service of Georgia will attend the joint sitting of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations and the Interim Commission on Territorial Integrity and De-occupation. The main topic of discussion will be the recent developments in occupied Abkhazia.
Lawmakers will have questions regarding the ongoing processes in Abkhazia, as well as the situation in the occupied Tskhinvali region.
The situation remains tense in Abkhazia, following on from the second round of "presidential elections" held there on September 8, where, according to the de-facto election commission, Raul Khajimba got 47.39% and 46.17% of the population voted for Alkhas Kvitsinia. The opposition did not recognize the results of the elections and demanded their annulment.
People took to the streets on January 9, demanding the resignation of de facto president Khajimba and snap "presidential elections."
Unrest throughout the region was followed by Khajimba's resignation on January 13. The de facto president noted that he did it to "promote peace and stability in Abkhazia."
Early on Monday, the so-called president met with the leaders of the opposition, Aslan Bzhaniya and Alkhaz Kvitsinia. The sides discussed ongoing developments in Abkhazia and exchanged views on ways to resolve the crisis.
Abkhazia’s “election administration” announced repeated “presidential elections” would take place on March 22. The announcement came two days after the "chamber of appeals” of the “supreme court” annulled the results of the September 8 "presidential runoff” in the region.
