Russian Parliament Approves Mikhail Mishustin as New Prime Minister

Russian lawmakers approved President Vladimir Putin's nomination for a new prime minister on Thursday, following a series of announcements including constitutional changes and the resignation of the government.

Reportedly, at a session on Thursday, the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, voted in favor of tax authority chief Mikhail Mishustin. He received 383 votes out of the 424 cast, which included 41 abstentions.

"The entire Russian government is resigning," former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced on Russian state television on Wednesday.

President Vladimir Putin thanked members of the government for their work, but noted that "not everything had worked out."
Putin noted that in the near future he will meet with each member of the cabinet.
The announcement on resignation came after Putin proposed constitutional amendments that would strengthen the powers of the prime minister and parliament at the expense of the presidency.
