PM, US Ambassador to Georgia Discuss Strategic Partnership Opportunities

Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia has met with the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to Georgia Kelly Degnan.

During the meeting, the sides focused on opportunities for further deepening the strategic partnership and cooperation between the two countries.

Gakharia and Degnan spoke about the priorities of the Georgian government, which was positively assessed by the Ambassador.

The government administration reports that special emphasis was placed on the close partnership and tangible results that the countries have in defense and security. The sides also highlighted opportunities for further deepening economic relations.

"I am very pleased that we had a very meaningful conversation. We discussed a variety of issues: security cooperation, economic cooperation and opportunities for enhancing economic ties, including a recently announced $7 million program initiated by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). It will have a good effect and strengthen the initiatives taken by the Georgian government,” said Degnan.

The head of government thanked the Ambassador for the US support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty and reaffirmed the country's irreversible European and Euro-Atlantic course.

After the meeting, the newly appointed US Ambassador noted that 2020 is an important year for the United States and Georgia, as both countries have elections.

“I look forward to working with the Government, people and civil society of Georgia on the democratic processes here," she said.

Degnan arrived in Georgia on January 29 to start her tenure.
