Armenian Government Decide to Hold a Referendum on Constitutional Amendments
The President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian has signed a declaration by which a referendum on Constitutional amendments will take place on April 5.
The background of the referendum is on adjourning the powers of majority members of its Constitutional Court. Political experts labeled this move as PM Nikol Pashinyan’s endeavor to sack the judges who have resisted him.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wrote on his Facebook page: “We will say ‘yes’ to the revolution, to freedom, and to a bright future on April 5.”
“The only hope of the former corrupt regime is pinned on the Constitutional Court and its president Hrayr Tovmasyan,” Pashinyan told the parliament.
Affiliates of the Republican party, now in opposition after the revolution, condemned the decision for a referendum. “This is an illogical, illegal and unconstitutional change,” the party said in an official announcement.
