British Embassy: Ugulava's Arrest Leaves Unanswered Questions

Throughout the day, international society has been responding to the arrest of Gigi Ugulava, one of the leaders of the political opposition of Georgia. The British Embassy in Tbilisi took to Twitter to say that Ugulava’s sentencing “leaves unanswered questions.”

“Sentencing of opposition leader Ugulava leaves unanswered questions around timing and process. Also impacts on dialogue on electoral system that will earn trust of Georgian electorate. As friend and strategic partner, UK encourages steps to narrow divisions and reinforce democracy,” reads the tweet on the British Embassy's official Twitter account.

On February 10, the Supreme Court found Ugulava guilty of embezzling funds, in particular, GEL 48 million, and sentenced him to three years in prison.
