Trump Remarks on Unlikely Reconciliation between Ukraine and Russia

Since Russia entered and seized Crimea in 2014, with the aid of hired separatists in the two easternmost regions of Ukraine, Luhansk and Donetsk, Kyiv lost control of both regions, amounting to 7% of its territory.

Trump spoke to reporters yesterday while getting ready to depart for his trip to India. The US President commented on the soaring conflict in Eastern Europe, hoping that reconciliation between the two countries would be beneficial for everyone. “Well, I'd like to see them come together. I think if they came together in the sense that they got along with each other, that would be a great thing,”

Trump added that “it would be a great thing for the world…. If Ukraine and Russia could work out some agreement where they get along, to me that would be very good.”

The conflict has amassed more than 13,000 bodies and some other 1.5 million people have been expatriated. The Kremlin refutes any wrongdoing in the region and maintains the perception that it is a civil war. This notion that the conflict in Ukraine is a self-propelled ‘civil war’ cannot be further away from the truth.
