120/30: Political Parties Reach Agreement on Electoral Model
After four rounds of talks and negotiations that ended without results, representatives of the Georgian government and opposition have reached the agreement on the electoral model.
The above decision was announced this evening after the meeting held at the US ambassador's residence, which was attended by a newly appointed US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan and EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell.
Members of the opposition and the government stated that they agreed on the 120/30 model and a 1-% barrier for the 2020 elections.
The participants of the meeting added that a memorandum has been drafted and signed at the meeting.
"An agreement has been reached between the political parties and everyone undertook a responsibility to bring the process to an end," Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze said, adding that today they held the last meeting in this format on electoral matters.
"There have been various ultimatums, sharp positions and disagreements, but today an agreement was reached between the political parties and everyone undertook a responsibility to bring the process to an end and to offer our citizens new democratic elections, which I hope will be held in accordance with an even higher standard. We can assume that this was the last meeting in this format on electoral matters, but we, as the ruling party, want that all this be maintained," he noted.
