Britons Urged to Work on Farms
Farming industry heads in the UK have delivered an urgent request for the British people to work on their farms and to help feed the nation during the product shortage which is expected to be caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Around 70,000 seasonal workers are needed yearly on British farms, many of whom come from abroad. But with the finalized Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic, travel limitations and harsher border controls are having a substantial effect on the number of workers able to travel to the UK.
With the ‘soft fruit harvest’ starting next month, labor provider Hops Labour Solutions said seasonal workforces were immediately needed to aid in picking and processing fruits and vegetables on farms. Farm occupations could postulate a salary for students, job strivers and anyone who had been ‘laid off’ work due to the impact of coronavirus.
Hops operations director Sarah Boparan said: “We urgently need a UK labor force which can help harvest crops to feed the nation. At a time when international travel is restricted, and people are panic buying due to the coronavirus, it is crucial that growers can provide enough British produce to our supermarkets and local shops.”
