French Backed "Global Ceasefire" Supported by Permanent UN Members
French President Emmanuel Macron claims that he has safeguarded the concessions of three of the five permanent members of the United Nations’ Security Council to upkeep the plea by the UN for a ‘global ceasefire’ so the focus can be addressed to the coronavirus pandemic.
"President Xi Jinping confirmed his agreement with me," Macron asserted "President Trump confirmed his agreement with me. Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed his agreement with me. I think President Putin will definitely agree too."
Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared, "Most likely, work is underway. At the expert level, our diplomats are working on this before we can join it. As soon as this work is completed and [passes] approval with other partners, relevant statements will be made."
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also backed the proposition and said: "The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war, that is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives."
The Secretary-General went on to detail the plea about the war-torn areas "We know the pandemic is having profound social, economic and political consequences, including relating to international peace and security.”
“We see it, for example, in the postponement of elections or limitations on the ability to vote, sustained restrictions on movement, spiraling unemployment and other factors” he added, “that could contribute to rising discontent and political tensions."
