Talakvadze: Gov't hasn't Undertaken Obligation to Free Ugulava, Okruashvili or Rurua

Georgian Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze has ordered the initiators of the March 8 discussions between the government and the opposition to openly confirm that the ‘government has not undertaken an obligation’ to apply to the President or to the Prosecutor's Office the release of Gigi Ugulava, Irakli Okruashvili or Giorgi Rurua. As Talakvadze confirmed, the abovementioned move would help to end rumors around this issue.

"The radical opposition enjoys the fact that the negotiations on the agreement were not public, and also that the diplomatic rules require maximum restraint from the ambassadors in terms of disclosing the contents of closed meetings. They are using this factor for speculations. Our society and our foreign friends are tired of these groundless speculations.

The facilitator ambassadors played an invaluable and decisive role in the successful conclusion of negotiations. We once again express our gratitude for their efforts and support, which, for the first time in the history of Georgia, made it possible to hold elections in a system based on full consensus among political parties. It is alarming that this result of the ambassadors' efforts could be jeopardized by the irresponsibility of the radical opposition. Therefore, to end speculations and ensure the implementation of the agreement, we ask the facilitator ambassadors to shed light on the content of the talks, in particular, we ask them to publicly confirm that the government has not undertaken an obligation to give illegal instructions to the President, court or Prosecutor's Office and to release Gigi Ugulava, Irakli Okruashvili or Giorgi Rurua. We also ask them to objectively assess the role of each signatory in the implementation of this agreement,” Talakvadze said at the press conference held at the Georgian Dream headquarters.
