MFA Responds to TikTok’s Step to Separate Abkhazia, South Ossetia as Independent Units

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia says it will respond appropriately to the decision of social network TikTok to separate occupied regions of Georgia as independent units.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia have been added to the list of countries / regions of the world by the TikTok social network by this time, May 13.

These places are considered by Georgia and the vast majority of UN countries to be part of Georgia's sovereign territory, which is under military occupation by the Russian Federation.

The Ministry notes that protection of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity is a top priority for the MFA.

"There are a number of examples when, as a result of the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the incorrect definition used on various websites regarding the occupied territories has been changed.

“We are working on the issue of social network TikTok in order to rectify the shortcomings on this site similar to the other previous cases," the statement reads.

TikTok - a social network that allows users to share short videos - is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. Nor does China recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
