Putin Sets Date for Vote Allowing Him to Stay in Power until 2036
On Monday, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin set the date for a nationwide vote on constitutional amendments that will allow him to stay in power until 2036.
The vote for the constitutional change was postponed from April 22 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Although Russia has reported 9,035 new coronavirus infections, which brought the country’s official number of cases to 414,878, the Russian President insisted that the pace of the outbreak has slowed down. During his video call to top officials, Putin argued that the fact allows the nation to safely hold the vote.
“We have fulfilled the main task — to prevent the explosive negative development of the situation. It allows us to return to normal life as the situation is gradually stabilizing,” Putin noted, adding that Russia has an additional 30 days before the vote to take necessary safety measures and make the ballot fully safe.
