NYC Lifts Curfew as Protests Endure

American media reports that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has lifted the curfew for the East Coast Metropolis.

The curfew was originally set to have its final night tonight starting at and 8 p.m. and expire at 5 a.m. Monday morning, when the city moves into ‘Phase One of Reopening’.

The curfew was put in motion after looting and violence took place in New York City. Although the curfew soon became a basis of rigidity between protesters and the authorities.

Officials and NYPD authorities implied that gangs of looters and “outside agitators” were taking advantage of peaceful George Floyd protests to create mayhem.

“There had to be a commitment to getting us past the attacks on people and property — getting us past the efforts to incite violence, getting us past the attacks on police officers — to peaceful protest. And that is what was achieved in the course of the week,” de Blasio said on Sunday.

The curfew initially was set for 11 p.m-5 a.m. but was prolonged to 8 p.m.-5 a.m. due to continued ransacking and looting. It included a prohibition on most vehicular traffic in the Manhattan area.

“New York City: We are lifting the curfew, effective immediately. Yesterday and last night we saw the very best of our city, […] Tomorrow we take the first big step to restart. Keep staying safe. Keep looking out for each other,” de Blasio wrote on Twitter.
