US Ambassador Assesses the Possible Postponement of the Elections
The US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan on Monday talked about the possible postponement of elections in Georgia due to the risk of a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
Ambassador Degnan expressed her confidence in Georgia’s ability to handle the situation and hold the elections in a safe, free, and trustworthy environment.
“I believe that this is a chance for Georgia to once again prove to the world that the country has achieved a lot of progress, and each election is better than the last. The parliament is in the process of discussing a very important reform and constitutional amendments. This is yet another opportunity for the country to hold free, fair, and trustworthy elections in these extraordinary times. As far as I know, the election date has not been set yet. The talks about possible postponement are connected to the government’s plan in case of a second wave of the pandemic. Other countries are also discussing this matter, since these are unprecedented times. Despite all this, I am sure everything will be done to hold the elections in a free and safe environment so that every Georgian’s voice is heard in the parliament. This is what the Georgians want,” said the US Ambassador.
